“Redoubt” includes John Skuk (2025) Dennis Lavant as a cute and ideal man who tries to do good during some unconfirmed times. He feels like a beacon of hope in the city’s residents, who live in times of the Cold War. There is a naive simplicity of his optimism, which makes him look like a warm presence. There are shades of Forest Gamp (character, not the movie) and Farid Rogers for his character in the film environment in the twentieth century. This looks unlike this type of roles that Lavant is more popular, as the intensity of its performance and physical expression was the prominent landmarks.

Take any of his collaboration with Leos Carax, “HOLY MOTORS”, “Lovers on The Bridge” or “Bad Blood”. You can feel the same intensity in its full performance. Whether the Akordion scene of a corridor or the performance of Al -Ahlani Modern love or Night rhythmHis physical body is used to express something raw and visceral, while maintaining the honesty of the essence of the emotional movie. In comparison, his performance in “Redoubt” is more natural, as it depends more on getting rid of the interior of the character rather than physical or privacy. The result, in this case, is a lovely image of a man who celebrates life despite the threats of death on the horizon.

Of course, this is not the first time that we see the performance of Lavant deals with the interior more than the outside. “Beau Travail” Claire Dennis shows his performance that cuts deep personality pain about the lack of agency and control. He looks cold and far around the young obedient soldiers in his crew. Therefore, it seems to be a trick that he places so that he can maintain his highest position in these masochy spaces, away from the amenities in their home. It is already the same to reveal his basic fears that he is trying to hide him. The last Lavant performance is the same.

In “Redoubt”, the French actor plays the popular Simpleton game in a way that makes you feel his joy and sorrows, often at the same time. His performance leaves you with a sweet taste and bitter, which may remind you of the work of Charlie Chaplin, as your heart goes out to his personality, even when he makes fun or mocks. These characters are heroes for some, while Buffon is for others. However, Chaplin makes you deeply interested in each of them.

The perpetrator associates something similar by working in the movie Skoog. He plays the role of Karl Juran Pearson, a farm worker from Sweden in the twentieth century, very concerned about potential attacks while living in unconfirmed times of the cold war. At that time, citizens began receiving safety instructions if they were unable to escape from a similar tragedy. Person was so afraid that he decided to build a castle, as a stronghold, against the imminent threats of his survival. He began to collect anything and everything he could find to collect a piece. Therefore, it seemed to be a person putting a clumsy parts of minerals, scraps or wood.

It is still from “Redoubt” (2025)

Regardless of its appearance, Person built this structure in a way that suits its defensive goal. Skoog deals with all the craftsmanship and metaphorical aspects of this castle randomly. He and the ITA ZBRONIC-Zajt Film Details focus on this structure through their wonderful black and white frames. They find beauty in the worldly patterns of any substance that the character uses, in ways that beauty may have found them in those things. Therefore, even the soft, shiny patterns of tar or coarse texture of its incomplete walls feel tangible on the screen.

Besides the visual, there is another layer of Pearson’s story, because it builds these walls around him as an unmarried middle -aged man. Despite its inner nature, it appears to be harmless and fun. We see him get out of his inner child while playing with children. Otherwise, it is separate from the world and it is only deeply. The writer and director Skoog listens to Lavant’s character on the realistic Person, who built a similar castle in his city. Skoog is supposed to have changed some details to highlight the fears of the current day of imminent death.

In his movie, we see Person as an introverted but emotional, but emotional individual, whose concerns are taking most of his decisions. He closes himself after he turned into laughter, but he does everything in his power to ensure safety for everyone around him. Pearson’s movie improves when he deals with the character’s image and trusts in his lyrical instincts. However, it does not reveal enough causes behind Pearson’s prosperous concern. It shows the people who dance a song that looks like the last Hala before the tragedy strikes, while Person sits quietly, descends, and lost in thought. It does not decrease but retracts when something or someone annoys him.

While everything highlights its isolation and a global fear of a looming tragedy, the text program lacks the privacy of cutting. Skoog gets a dark mood with the help of Lavant, but its scenario feels certain for a project that would benefit from a deeper view of the cultural and historical context of this era.

“Redoubt” by Skoog is part of San Sebastián International for the year 2025 Film Festival.
